Q: Does God care about my plans?
What do you think?
If you sensed a sarcastic tone in my response, please do not. I am genuinely asking you the question back, “Do you think God cares about your plans? Why or why not?”
This is a very important question you have asked. It is, likewise, a very important question I’m asking back and that I’d like to discuss for a minute because you’ve keyed into something essential for spiritual growth.
Let Him lead on the dance floor of life. There’s three things I’d like you to consider as you pray about this question.
1. Know this, God cares about you, not only your dreams or “plans”. That being said, God loves you more than you love yourself.
His plans for you are better than your plans:
“For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.” - Jer 29:11-12
His ways, too, are much better than our ways – He is perfect:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” - Isaiah 55:8-9
2. This question is difficult (but common), too, because we’re afraid that eventhough God might have a “wonderful plan” (as we discussed in #1), that it could never be as good as or, in the end, as much fun as the plan we have for ourselves.
When we approach it as “does God care about my plan” instead of the other way around, we are trying to make ourself the author of our life. Make no mistake, God is the author – without Him, you have no life. You are the character, He is the author; it is your story, yes, but your story is part of His story, He’s writing it.
The question we should be asking is “Do I care about God’s plan?”
3. Usually this “question” that stirs in our soul(s) stems from a relationship with God that struggles with trust. If we really trusted God, and in His great love for us, we wouldn’t worry about whether or not He’d take care of us.
Consider this famous passage from St. Matthew’s gospel:
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith?
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day.” - Matthew 6:29-34
He does care.
Let Him write the story and, believe me, you will be happier – (John 10:10).
Let Him lead on the dance floor of life.
